Star Wars Ideology

Star Wars, like everything that is widely accepted, works on many levels so everyone can find something to relate to. You have the gunfights that appeal to children, you have the romance that appeal to romantics and you have the extensive showcase of futuristic vehicles and scenery to please the sci-fi audience. And these are just a few of the subjects George Lukas get’s he’s hands dirty with, with just this one creation.

Surprisingly, one of the major aspects of the movies is almost totally overlooked. And I’m talking about the existence of the Force. I think to most people it’s just a silly vehicle to explain all the stunts and special powers but I certainly feel there is more truth in it’s existence than fiction.

I believe that Star Wars has a deep psychological background and the Force is there to disguise it up and make it more digestible by the crowds. I’ll try to pinpoint some examples so I can make it clear what I mean.

The first and most significant proof is the scene in Episode VI where Luke Skywalker is tempted to give in to his anger and go to the dark side. This is a choice all people have to make in their real lives – should they give in to their anger and attack they offenders or should they be patient? And if so where is the limit between the two?

This same theme is repeated in Episode III where Anakin chooses revenge and we see that this leads him into becoming Darth Vader, so it is proven that it is the wrong choice.

….

Some other thoughts:

Luke Skywalker can be considered as the all american boy, who goes to college and get’s all the girls. That’s why he sees the stormtroopers (aka outsiders) all the same and Darth Vader on the other side hates his guts. {OK, I may have gone a bit too far on this one LOL}

There is a scene in star wars IV were Luke Skywalker enters a bar and he sees all sorts of aliens having fun… I always get this feeling when I enter a “human” club – I see all those strange faces that I cannot really relate to any of them. I don’t know if that’s agoraphobia or just ego, but I simply feel there aren’t any normal people around…

Darth Vader can be considered as an anarchist with long black hair that everyone considers an outcast. I know, having long black hair myself, I found that many times I felt the anger raising up to my brain just because people gave me all those strange looks and couldn’t understand what I was all about. I felt a lot like Darth Vader indeed…

The FORCE is in essence a neutral power that can be used for good or evil. Both the Jedis and the Siths use the same FORCE – they are the different sides of the same coin.

As in life, when we are called to choose whether we are going to be good or bad, there is a certain tense inside us – a dynamic like a force one could say – and through our choice we will use this power to do good or evil.
